FORMER Cameroonian broadcast personality and ambassador for people with disabilities Hilda Bih Muluh (43) recently (August 2023) launched her biography, The Girl with Special Shoes.

Muluh, whose remarkable story has featured in The Washington Post and NPR (National Public Radio) in the USA, has lived in the Washington region since 2018 after fleeing Cameroon due to political instability.

Her impressive list of achievements includes selection for the Mandela Washington Fellowship, a career as a national radio broadcaster, advocacy for people with disabilities, painting without the use of her limbs, and mentoring young girls through the Esther Project that she founded.

Muluh, who lost the use of her hands and legs after developing muscular dystrophy at the age of 4, had to overcome much prejudice growing up. Disabled people are often viewed as cursed in African communities and rejected, even by their own families. Muluh’s family, however, was very supportive, and remain close.

Oasis International *, who published The Girl with Special Shoes, said Muluh’s story was a natural fit for its focus on Christian content by African authors.

Company President Dr Matthew Elliott said Muluh’s testimony of how her faith had carried her through many hardships resonated with audiences both in Africa and the United States. “The honest way in which she speaks about her setbacks, the inspiration she provides through her successes, and her continued advocacy for people with disabilities despite her own challenges make her story truly remarkable.

“Hilda has faced much adversity, from armed robbery to government inaction to implement legislation that will improve the lives of people with disabilities. Not only has she led an interesting life so far, but her journalistic background helped her to relate it in a very engaging way,” Dr Elliott said.

The Girl with Special Shoes is available in hard copy and e-book format from leading online book retailers and selected bookstores.
