Distributing God’s Word in challenging times
Bible distribution suffered immensely due to the Covid-19 pandemic, not only in South Africa but also globally. Bible Societies worldwide were able to distribute 30 million complete Bibles during 2020. Over 190 million Scripture items, including Bibles, New Testaments, Gospels, and smaller Scripture Portions and Selections were distributed across the world. This is the message coming from the United Bible Societies Fellowship, consisting of 150 Bible Societies working in 240 countries and territories. Bible Societies have provided around 70% of the world’s complete Bible translations.
Distribution of complete Bibles had decreased by 37% in comparison to 2019, while New Testament distribution had declined by 63%. However, Internet downloads increased by 113% year on year overall, reflecting the global upswing of online usage, and as a result, more people were able to engage with Scripture digitally.
Despite the decline in distribution the Bible Society of South Africa distributed 596 632 complete Bibles in all formats in the 2020 financial year. The number of printed Bibles, which includes braille and audio Bibles, amounted to 403 666 copies, a decline of 37,6% in comparison to the previous year.
“The Covid-19 pandemic did hamper our operations, but by the grace of our Lord we could continue with our work. We are grateful to every distributor who sell Bibles and to all our supporters for their unquivering support during these trying times,” said Rev Dirk Gevers, the CEO of the Bible Society of South Africa.
Despite all of the challenges the Bible Society of South Africa were privileged to release three new complete Bibles: The English Bible for the Deaf, the isiZulu Bible 2020 translation and the Afrikaans Bible 2020 translation.
