The Ubomi Obutsha Centre first opened in 1998, under the leadership of American missionaries, Don and Judy Bixler, as an outreach project of Combined Christian Ministries to the Poor to the vulnerable children and their families of the township of Kwazakhele, Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
Over the years, the project grew in scope, reach, ability and community participation until it was decided to establish it as a standalone non-profit organisation.
This was finalised in late 2015.
The Ubomi Obutsha Centre is currently run by Mark Lawler and Nondumiso Langa and services around 700 children per month through 19 distinct activities. This is all made possible by those who identify with our mission and contribute materially or financially and the input (in 2017) of 14 community, 17 local, and 5 international volunteers.
"Ubomi obutsha" means "new life" in isiXhosa, the local traditional language.
