Hospice is both a program and a philosophy of care that is dedicated to improving the quality of life for patients with a terminal illness. Hospice provides a program of palliative care which encompasses the holistic care of patients whose disease is no longer responsive to curative treatment.
St Francis Hospice was established in 1984 by a group of individuals with a shared vision to provide care and support for those living with life-limiting illnesses. This vision became a reality in 1986, initially through a home care service and in 1988, backed by the generosity of the community, a small In-patient Unit was opened. The latter was closed in 2005, due to financial constraints, & emphasis placed on caring for patients in their own homes.
July 1997 saw the establishment of a rural outreach in the Kouga area, when a branch of Hospice opened in Humansdorp, offering care to patients as far afield as Tsitsikamma. In 1999 an outreach into Uitenhage and the surrounding areas commenced. Since 2000, Home Care bases have been located in the various communities we serve.
